Position Overview

Travel MRI Technologist Job Details

  • Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,150–$2,310
  • Location: Petersburg, Virginia
  • Healthcare Setting: Hospital MRI department serving emergency and inpatient populations
  • Start Date: October 26, 2026
  • Contract Duration: 13 weeks, ending January 25, 2027
  • Schedule: Four weekday day shifts per week, Tuesday–Friday
  • Shift Duration: 10-hour day shift designation; approximately 7:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
  • Call: No call
  • Expected Volume: Approximately 10 MRI scans per shift

MRI Technologist Job Requirements

  • At least 1 year of MRI Technologist experience in a hospital setting
  • ARRT certification and registration in Diagnostic Radiography with an advanced MRI registry (MR), or the ability to obtain the MRI registry within one year of hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association or an approved provider before providing direct patient care
  • Associate degree from an ARRT-accredited program preferred
  • Experience with EPIC and Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) preferred
  • Strong knowledge of MRI workflows, imaging protocols, equipment operation, and magnetic resonance safety
  • Ability to work with patients across the lifespan, including pediatric, neonatal, adult, and geriatric populations
  • Travel candidates must reside outside the facility’s 50-mile local radius requirement
  • Ability to safely assist with patient positioning, equipment movement, and lifting or transferring patients as needed

MRI Technologist Responsibilities

  • Perform MRI examinations according to established protocols, physician requests, and patient-specific needs
  • Select appropriate pulse sequences, surface coils, scan parameters, and physiologic gating devices to produce diagnostic images
  • Verify patient identity, review clinical history, obtain applicable consent, and explain MRI procedures clearly
  • Screen patients thoroughly for metallic objects and MRI contraindications while maintaining controlled access to MRI safety zones
  • Position patients safely and comfortably and monitor their condition throughout the examination
  • Perform IV injections and administer MRI contrast agents in accordance with approved protocols and scope of practice
  • Manipulate and evaluate images for optimal visualization of the requested anatomy
  • Complete quality assurance and quality control activities and maintain clinical competency
  • Troubleshoot MRI equipment issues when appropriate and promptly report malfunctions to radiology leadership or maintenance personnel
  • Document patient care, examination details, unusual activities, and relevant findings accurately
  • Collaborate with radiologists, physicians, nursing teams, and other imaging departments to support coordinated patient care
  • Assist with orientation and training for new staff and support the education of MRI students
  • Follow OSHA standards, infection-control policies, universal precautions, and MRI safety procedures
