Pharmacy Technician Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED required
- At least 3 years of high-volume retail pharmacy technician experience required
- 1+ year of prior authorization experience preferred
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) required
- Strong knowledge of prescription processing, pharmacy benefit investigation, and prior authorization workflows
- Ability to work independently under pharmacist supervision in a healthcare environment
- Comfort using EMR systems, Microsoft Office, and other technology applications
- Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills
Pharmacy Technician Responsibilities
- Complete prescription prior authorization requests for outpatient pharmacy providers under pharmacist supervision
- Identify and complete the appropriate pharmacy benefit manager prior authorization forms for submission
- Review and transcribe prescription, prescriber, and patient information from the EMR into authorization forms
- Use plan criteria questions and patient chart data to support accurate and timely prior authorization submissions
- Submit and follow up on prior authorization requests within required departmental timeframes
- Communicate submission status, approvals, denials, and follow-up needs to pharmacy and clinical teams
- Maintain accurate internal records and documentation related to prior authorization activity
- Collaborate with pharmacy, provider, and internal authorization teams to support efficient, patient-centered outcomes
- Maintain current knowledge of ICD-10 diagnosis codes, medications, and disease-state resources relevant to prior authorization work
- Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to quality patient care
