Cardiovascular Sonographer Job Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience performing echocardiography in a hospital or cardiovascular imaging setting
  • One of the following credentials: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) through Cardiovascular Credentialing International, or Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer through the Canadian Association of Registered Diagnostic Ultrasound Professionals
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire
  • Demonstrated proficiency with echocardiography equipment, color and power Doppler, spectral Doppler, and M-mode
  • Ability to perform portable, transthoracic, limited, stress, and transesophageal echocardiograms
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to provide compassionate, professional patient care
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a multidisciplinary cardiovascular care team

Echocardiography Sonographer Responsibilities

  • Operate echocardiography equipment and obtain clear, diagnostically useful images for cardiologist interpretation
  • Perform portable echocardiograms, transthoracic echocardiograms, limited echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms, and transesophageal echocardiograms
  • Evaluate images for quality and complete appropriate annotations, labeling, and measurements
  • Transmit echocardiography studies to PACS and Synapse systems, including studies that require continuation of care at another facility
  • Prepare preliminary reports in the Synapse echocardiography system for cardiologist review and final interpretation
  • Review orders, clinical indications, patient history, allergies, and any required preparation before each examination
  • Greet patients professionally, explain procedures clearly, and promote a comfortable and respectful diagnostic imaging experience
  • Place peripheral IVs when indicated and permitted by certification and departmental policy, including for agitated saline, contrast, or stress echocardiography studies
  • Document patient care services in the electronic medical record and accurately charge completed examinations
  • Maintain required equipment and procedural records, including transesophageal probe cleaning, storage, and quality-control documentation
