Travel Nursing Job Details

• Specialty: Cardiac/Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CVICU/CTICU)
• Position: Travel Registered Nurse – ICU
• Location: Chesapeake, Virginia
• Weekly Estimated Pay: $2,020–$2,130
• Start Date: November 9, 2026
• Assignment End Date: February 8, 2027
• Contract Duration: 13 weeks, with possible extension
• Shift: 12-hour nights, approximately 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
• Schedule: 3 or 4 shifts per week; 36 hours weekly
• Scheduling Expectations: Every other weekend and holidays during the assignment are required; two of the three winter holidays must be worked
• Patient Population: Adults, including post-operative CABG, acute coronary syndrome, NSTEMI, STEMI, and CHF patients
• Patient Ratios: Typically 1:1–2
• Unit Model: Universal-bed model, with ICU patients who downgrade to step-down remaining in the unit until discharge
• Technology: Epic, FloTrac/Vigileo, pulmonary artery catheter monitoring, Impella, IABP, CRRT/CVVHD, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring equipment

Travel ICU RN Requirements

• At least 2 years of recent CVICU, CTICU, or comparable cardiac intensive care experience
• Active Virginia or compact Registered Nurse license in hand at the time of submission
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications through the American Heart Association
• NIH Stroke Scale certification
• Proficiency with Epic electronic documentation
• Strong experience managing cardiac and vasoactive medication infusions
• Experience with ventilated patients, arterial lines, central lines, PICC lines, sedation, ABG interpretation, and dysrhythmia management
• Experience with post-cardiac surgery care, CABG patients, cardiac catheterization patients, IABP, Impella, Swan-Ganz monitoring, and CRRT/CVVHD
• Neurocritical care experience, including post-brain-surgery patients, EVD/ventriculostomy management, ICP monitoring, and acute stroke care
• Ability to care for both ICU and step-down patients within a universal-bed model
• Successful completion of required pre-start competency and cardiac rhythm testing
• Must meet assignment-specific licensure, background screening, and fit-testing requirements
• Travel nursing experience is preferred
• Applicants residing within 50 miles of the assignment location are not eligible

Cardiothoracic ICU Registered Nurse Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive bedside care for critically ill adult cardiac and cardiothoracic patients
• Care for patients before and after CABG, cardiac catheterization, and other cardiac interventions
• Monitor and manage arterial lines, central lines, PICC lines, pulmonary artery catheters, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring systems
• Titrate cardiac, vasoactive, sedative, insulin, and other critical care infusions according to clinical protocols
• Manage ventilated patients and provide care involving BiPAP, CPAP, HFNC, airway suctioning, and ventilator support
• Recognize and respond to dysrhythmias, acute stroke, multi-system organ failure, and other rapidly changing conditions
• Support patients requiring IABP, Impella, CRRT/CVVHD, EVD management, and other advanced therapies
• Administer blood products and procedural sedation while maintaining patient safety standards
• Provide infection prevention, isolation precautions, wound care, and drain or wound-vac management
• Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, IV teams, rehabilitation services, rapid response teams, and other members of the care team
• Float between ICU and step-down responsibilities as needed within the unit’s universal-bed model
• Document accurately in Epic and communicate changes in patient condition promptly
